Why pray the Rosary every day for a year?

Each time the Blessed Virgin has appeared-- whether it be to Saint Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes; to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco at Fatima; or to Mariette Beco at Banneux-- she has asserted the importance, saving grace, and power of praying the Holy Rosary on a daily basis. Based upon her words, the Rosary is penance and conversion for sinners, a pathway to peace, an end to war, and a powerful act of faith in Jesus Christ. Pope Paul VI presented the Rosary as a powerful means to reach Christ "not merely with Mary but indeed, insofar as this is possible to us, in the same way as Mary, who is certainly the one who thought about Him more than anyone else has ever done."

To show us how this is done, perhaps no one has been more eloquent than the great Cardinal Newman, who wrote: "The great power of the Rosary consists in the fact that it translates the Creed into Prayer. Of course, the Creed is already in a certain sense a prayer and a great act of homage towards God, but the Rosary brings us to meditate again on the great truth of His life and death, and brings this truth close to our hearts. Even Christians, although they know God, usually fear rather than love Him. The strength of the Rosary lies in the particular manner in which it considers these mysteries, since all our thinking about Christ is intertwined with the thought of His Mother, in the relations between Mother and Son; the Holy Family is presented to us, the home in which God lived His infinite love."

As Mary said at Fatima, "Jesus wants to use you to make Me known and loved. He wishes to establish the devotion to My Immaculate Heart throughout the world. I promise salvation to whoever embraces it; these souls will be dear to God, like flowers put by Me to adorn his throne."

Prayer of the Handmaids of the Eucharist: The Akita Prayer

Posted by Jacob

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, truly present in the Holy Eucharist, I consecrate my body and soul to be entirely one with Thy Heart, being sacrificed at every instant on all the altars of the world and giving praise to the Father pleading for the coming of his Kingdom. Please receive this humble offering of myself. Use me as Thou wilt for the glory of the Glory of the Father and salvation of souls. Most Holy Mother of God, never let me be separated from Thine Divine Son. Please defend and protect me as Thy special child. Amen

In 1973, Our Blessed Mother—Our Lady of Akita—appeared to Sister Agnes Sasagawa at Akita Japan. Sister Agnes, a member of the Institute of the Handmaids of the Eucharist, received three messages from The Blessed Virgin, the first of which asked her to pray the Prayer of the Handmaids of the Eucharist each day. In this prayer, Our Lady introduced three subtle new devotions through her apparitions at Akita, building upon those she had delivered at Fatima. Two of these new devotions are contained within the prayer itself.

The first new devotion communicated by Mary to Sister Agnes, and therefore to the world, at Akita, was the use of the term: “truly.” That is, referring to the "Sacred Heart of Jesus truly present in Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.” The word "truly" was not used by the Angel at Fatima. It is believed that Our Lady chose this prayer to emphasize the reality of the true sacramental presence of the Body, Blood, Soul, and Divinity of Jesus Christ present in the Most Blessed Sacrament of the Altar. The faithful are thus called to refer to and believe in Jesus as "truly" present in the Blessed Sacrament of the Altar.

The second devotion introduced at Akita was the inclusion of the soul as called to consecrate itself in union with the Eucharistic Heart of Jesus present in Blessed Sacrament. Souls are called to identify themselves to be consciously spiritually and supernaturally united with the sacramental presence of Our Eucharistic Lord.

The third devotion explicitly ratified at Akita, is the reality of Our Lady as Co-Redemptrix of the Human Race. This was demonstrated by the agonies of pain and sorrow which the Blessed Virgin continues to suffer for the salvation of men- a sorrow which is closely related to her sorrow on Calvary. The pain and sorrow expressed by Our Lady of Akita demonstrates not only her intimate participation in the Salvation of the Human Race, but also her integral participation in the redemptive sacrifice of the Human Race performed in sacrificial union with Jesus at Calvary. Mary suffered to atone for the sin of Eve, while Christ suffered to atone for the sin of Adam. The sins of both Adam and Eve constituted the fullness of the fall of the Human Race, and the sufferings of both Jesus and Mary constituted the fullness of the redemption of the human race, which was accomplished at Calvary.

Our Lady of Akita: The Second Message

Posted by Jacob

Today, August 3, marks the anniversary of the second message delivered to Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa by Our Lady of Akita, Japan. (For more on Sister Agnes, click here). Previously, in June of 1973, Sister Agnes had witnessed a heavenly glow emanating from the tabernacle in the convent chapel, and had witnesses a “multitude of angels surrounding the alter in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.” A wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin had also begun to weep. Following her vision, Sister Agnes had developed a miraculous stigmata on her hand in the shape of a cross, which appeared each week.

Sister Agnes, deaf in both ears, reported three messages in total from the Blessed Virgin during 1973. The last vision would occur in October. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary- carved from a single block of Katsura wood from a tree, and approximately three feet tall-- continued to weep thereafter for some years. On July 6, 1973, Sister Agnes reported that she first heard the statue calling her. She was visited by her guardian angel and Our Blessed Mother and the wooden statue also began to bleed. The message of Our Blessed Mother on July 6 was to pray for the reparation of the sins of man.

She also provided Sister Agnes with the Akita Prayer:

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, truly present in the Holy Eucharist, I consecrate my body and soul to be entirely one with Thy Heart, being sacrificed at every instant on all the altars of the world and giving praise to the Father pleading for the coming of his Kingdom. Please receive this humble offering of myself. Use me as Thou wilt for the glory of the Glory of the Father and salvation of souls. Most Holy Mother of God, never let me be separated from Thine Divine Son. Please defend and protect me as Thy special child. Amen

On August 3, Sister Agnes was in the chapel praying the Rosary when her guardian angel appeared to her. She had come armed with a list of questions, proposed by her bishop, to ask Our Blessed Mother, should she return. Her guardian angel said to her:

" You have something to ask? Go ahead, you have no need to be troubled."

Sister Agnes began to speak, but was interrupted by the beautiful voice from the statue, saying:

"My daughter, my novice, do you love the Lord? If you love the Lord, listen to what I have to say to you. It is very important...You will convey it to your superior.

Many men in this world afflict the Lord. I desire souls to console Him to soften the anger of the Heavenly Father. I wish, with my Son, for souls who will repair by their suffering and their poverty for the sinners and ingrates.

In order that the world might know His anger, the Heavenly Father is preparing to inflict a great chastisement on all mankind. With my Son I have intervened so many times to appease the wrath of the Father. I have prevented the coming of calamities by offering Him the sufferings of the Son on the Cross, His Precious Blood, and beloved souls who console Him forming a cohort of victim souls. Prayer, penance and courageous sacrifices can soften the Father's anger. I desire this also from your community...that it love poverty, that it sanctify itself and pray in reparation for the ingratitude and outrages of so many men.

Recite the prayer of the Handmaids of the Eucharist with awareness of its meaning; put it into practice; offer in reparation (whatever God may send) for sins. Let each one endeavor, according to capacity and position, to offer herself entirely to the Lord.

Even in a secular institute prayer is necessary. Already souls who wish to pray are on the way to being gathered together. Without attaching to much attention to the form, be faithful and fervent in prayer to console the Master."

Sister Agnes reported a long silence occurred at this point, where she prayed in earnest to be worthy to receive the messages of Mary. She was rewarded with a further message:

"Is what you think in your heart true? Are you truly decided to become the rejected stone? My novice, you who wish to belong without reserve to the Lord, to become the spouse worthy of the Spouse, make your vows knowing that you must be fastened to the Cross with three nails. These three nails are poverty, chastity, and obedience. Of the three, obedience is the foundation. In total abandon, let yourself be led by your superior. He will know how to understand you and to direct you."

In total, Sister Agnes would receive three messages from Our Lady of Akita, similar to those delivered by Our Lady of Fatima. Additional miracles would occur, including several miraculous cures. As with her other appearances on earth, Our Blessed Mother urges us to pray the Rosary daily, to lift our lives to the Lord in reparation for not only our own sins, but the sins of mankind. She urges prayer, penance, and courageous sacrifice for the sins of others. Our Blessed Mother promises to intercede for us, if we only ask her to: Our Blessed Mother, our constant advocate, Mediatrix of all Graces, and Co-Redemptrix of the Human Race!

Our Lady of Akita: The Final Apparition

Today, October 13, marks the anniversary of the third and final message delivered to Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa by Our Lady of Akita, Japan. Most Holy Mother of God, never let me be separated from Thine Divine Son. Please defend and protect me as Thy special child. Amen

On August 3, Sister Agnes was again visited by Our Blessed Mother, who encouraged her to continue praying the Akita Prayer (the Prayer of the Handmaids of the Eucharist) for reparation for the sins of the world. She warned that the Lord was sending a great chastisement to the world, which had become greatly sinful. Finally, Mary encouraged Sister Agnes to dedicate herself completely to the Lord, joining him upon the cross with the three nails of poverty, obedience, and charity.

On October 13, the anniversary of the Fatima Miracle of the Sun, Sister Agnes would receive her final visitation from Our Blessed Mother. The final message, delivered as the previous messages via a beautiful voice emanating from the Akita statue (and recorded by Sister Agnes), was as follows:

"My dear daughter, listen well to what I have to say to you. You will inform your superior."

Sister Agnes later recounted that there was a short silence, during which she prayed in earnest to be worthy to receive such a heavenly message. Our Blessed Mother continued:

"As I told you, if men do not repent and better themselves, the Father will inflict a terrible punishment on all humanity. It will be a punishment greater than the deluge, such as one will never seen before. Fire will fall from the sky and will wipe out a great part of humanity, the good as well as the bad, sparing neither priests nor faithful. The survivors will find themselves so desolate that they will envy the dead. The only arms which will remain for you will be the Rosary and the Sign left by My Son. Each day recite the prayers of the Rosary. With the Rosary, pray for the Pope, the bishops and priests."

After a moment, Our Lady of the Rosary continued:

"The work of the devil will infiltrate even into the Church in such a way that one will see cardinals opposing cardinals, bishops against bishops. The priests who venerate me will be scorned and opposed by their confreres... churches and altars sacked; the Church will be full of those who accept compromises and the demon will press many priests and consecrated souls to leave the service of the Lord.

The demon will be especially implacable against souls consecrated to God. The thought of the loss of so many souls is the cause of my sadness. If sins increase in number and gravity, there will be no longer pardon for them.

With courage, speak to your superior. He will know how to encourage each one of you to pray and to accomplish works of reparation."

Sister Agnes asked, "Who is my superior?"

"It is Bishop Ito, who directs your community."

Our Blessed Mother then smiled and gently said:

"You have still something to ask? Today is the last time that I will speak to you in living voice. From now on you will obey the one sent to you and your superior."

Pray very much the prayers of the Rosary. I alone am able still to save you from the calamities which approach. Those who place their confidence in me will be saved."

During a Sunday Mass nine years later, Sister Agnes was miraculously cured of her total deafness. Additional miracles, attributed to the intercession of Our Lady of Akita, would occur, including several other miraculous cures.

The message of Akita is quite similar to the other messages delivered by Our Blessed Mother, advocate of sinners, Gate of Heaven, and Co-Redemptrix of the World. The Blessed Virgin, Our Lady of the Rosary, urges us to pray the Rosary daily, to lift our lives to the Lord in reparation for not only our own sins, but the sins of mankind. She urges prayer, penance, and courageous sacrifice for the sins of others. Our Blessed Mother promises to intercede for us, if we only ask her to: Our Blessed Mother, our constant advocate, the Mediatrix of all Graces!

Our Lady of Akita: The First Message

Posted by Jacob

Today, July 6, marks the anniversary of the first message delivered to Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa by Our Lady of Akita, Japan. (For more on Sister Agnes and the prelude to the messages of Akita, click here). Previously, in June of 1973, Sister Agnes had witnessed a heavenly glow emanating from the tabernacle in the convent chapel, and had witnesses a “multitude of angels surrounding the alter in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.”

Following her vision, Sister Agnes continued praying, but was interrupted by a sudden scratching sensation, followed by pain, upon the palm of her left hand. She gazed upon her skin, where two red scratches in the form of a cross had appeared. The pain increased over the next several days, until she received both a visitation from her guardian angel and a message from Our Blessed Mother on July 6. Following the visit, the appearance of the cross-shaped stigmata continued to appear every week, with Sister Agnes feeling pain on Thursdays, and experiencing the scratches on Fridays and Saturdays.
Sister Agnes, deaf in both ears, reported three messages from the Blessed Virgin during 1973, beginning today. The statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary- carved from a single block of Katsura wood from a tree, and approximately three feet tall-- continued to weep thereafter for some years. On July 6, 1973, Sister Agnes reported that she first heard the statue calling her, and then the first message began.

The message from Our Blessed Mother, delivered to Sister Agnes was as follows:

"My daughter, my novice, you have obeyed me well in abandoning all to follow me. Is the infirmity of your ears painful? Your deafness will be healed, be sure. Does the wound of your hand cause you to suffer? Pray in reparation for the sins of men. Each person in this community is my irreplaceable daughter. Do you say well the prayer of the Handmaids of the Eucharist? Then, let us pray it together.

‘Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, truly present in Holy Eucharist, I consecrate my body and soul to be entirely one with Your Heart, being sacrificed at every instant on all the altars of the world and giving praise to the Father pleading for the coming of His Kingdom.

Please receive this humble offering of myself. Use me as You will for the glory of the Father and the salvation of souls.

Most holy Mother of God, never let me be separated from Your Divine Son. Please defend and protect me as Your Special Child. Amen.’

When the prayer was finished, the “most beautiful voice” of Our Blessed Mother instructed: "Pray very much for the Pope, Bishops, and Priests. Since your Baptism you have always prayed faithfully for them. Continue to pray very much...very much. Tell your superior all that passed today and obey him in everything that he will tell you. He has asked that you pray with fervor."

Later in the day, several other sisters of the convent noticed that the hand of the wooden statue had drops of blood flowing from it.

She promises to intercede for us, if we only ask her to: Our Blessed Mother, our constant advocate, our mediatrix of all graces! Most holy Mother of God, never let me be separated from Your Divine Son. Please defend and protect me as Your Special Child.

Inspired by the origins and spiritual history of the Holy Rosary, we continue our meditation on the psalms, one each day, in order, for 150 days.
Today’s Psalm: Psalm 72: The King of Glory

1 Endow the king with your justice, O God,
the royal son with your righteousness.
2 He will judge your people in righteousness,
your afflicted ones with justice.
3 The mountains will bring prosperity to the people,
the hills the fruit of righteousness.
4 He will defend the afflicted among the people
and save the children of the needy;
he will crush the oppressor.
5 He will endure as long as the sun,
as long as the moon, through all generations.
6 He will be like rain falling on a mown field,
like showers watering the earth.
7 In his days the righteous will flourish;
prosperity will abound till the moon is no more.
8 He will rule from sea to sea
and from the River to the ends of the earth.
9 The desert tribes will bow before him
and his enemies will lick the dust.
10 The kings of Tarshish and of distant shores
will bring tribute to him;
the kings of Sheba and Seba
will present him gifts.
11 All kings will bow down to him
and all nations will serve him.
12 For he will deliver the needy who cry out,
the afflicted who have no one to help.
13 He will take pity on the weak and the needy
and save the needy from death.
14 He will rescue them from oppression and violence,
for precious is their blood in his sight.
15 Long may he live!
May gold from Sheba be given him.
May people ever pray for him
and bless him all day long.
16 Let grain abound throughout the land;
on the tops of the hills may it sway.
Let its fruit flourish like Lebanon;
let it thrive like the grass of the field.
17 May his name endure forever;
may it continue as long as the sun.
All nations will be blessed through him,
and they will call him blessed.
18 Praise be to the LORD God, the God of Israel,
who alone does marvelous deeds.
19 Praise be to his glorious name forever;
may the whole earth be filled with his glory.
Amen and Amen.
20 This concludes the prayers of David son of Jesse.

Our Lady of Akita: Prelude to Our Blessed Mother's Messages

Posted by Jacob

In 1973, on the days of June 12th, 13th, and 14th , something miraculous occurred in Akita, Japan: a message from Our Blessed Mother began. Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa was the visionary selected by Mary, Mother of God, to receive and relay her messages—a role that she had been preparing for her entire life.

Sister Agnes had not had an easy life. At the age of 19, she was paralyzed during an accident in a routine medical operation. For sixteen years, Agnes lived immobile, completely dependent on others to drive her to medical appointments and care for her basic needs. She suffered through many operations, most largely unsuccessful. During one hospitalization she met a Catholic nurse, who instructed her on the tenets of the faith, taught her to pray, and brought her to Christ. Agnes, through prayer, improved significantly, and was eventually accepted into the community of Nuns of the Virgin Mary, located in Nagasaki.

Agnes served joyfully with her community for four months, after which time her health suffered. She was again hospitalized, unconscious, her condition listed as critical. Doctors had little hope for recovery. Again, through the power of prayer and after drinking blessed water from Lourdes, she recovered. Agnes officially joined the order of Eucharistic Servants, becoming Sister Agnes, and moved to the remote mountain community of Yuzawadai to live with the community. It was there that she completely lost her hearing, and the miraculous events of Akita unfolded.

On June 12, 1973, Sister Agnes was praying in the chapel, deaf, when she witnessed a brilliant and mysterious light begin emanating from the tabernacle. On each of the two successive days—June 13 and 14—she witnessed the same heavenly glow.

Later in the month, on June 28, Sister Agnes again witnessed the heavenly glow emanating from the tabernacle—although this time, she described it as “blinding.” In the glow, she discerned a multitude of angels surrounding the alter in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament.

Following her vision, Agnes continued praying, but was interrupted by a sudden scratching sensation, followed by pain, upon the palm of her left hand.

In total, Sister Agnes would receive three messages from Our Lady of Akita, similar to those delivered by Our Lady of Fatima. Additional miracles would occur, including a bleeding statue of the Blessed Virgin, and several miraculous cures.

The messages and miracles at Akita have been approved by the Church. In 1988, Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger, Prefect, Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, declared definitively that the Akita events and messages were reliable and worthy of belief.
Eucharistic Prayer of Akita:

Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, truly present in the Holy Eucharist, I consecrate my body and soul to be entirely one with Your Heart, being sacrificed at every instant on all the alters of the world and giving praise to the Father, pleading for the coming of His Kingdom. Please receive this humble offering of myself. Use me as you will for the glory of the Father and the salvation of souls. Most Holy Mother of God, never let me separated from Your Divine Son. Please defend and protect me as Your special child. Amen.

Our Lady of Akita: Weeping Statue

Posted by Jacob

Beginning on June 12, 1973, the Blessed Mother gave three Messages to Sister Agnes Katsuko Sasagawa in Akita, Japan through a carved wooden statue of Mary. The statue, bathed in a brilliant light, would “come alive” and speak with a “voice of indescribable beauty.” I’ll talk about these messages in June, on the anniversary of their delivery.

Beginning thirty-five years ago today, January 4, 1975, the statue of the Blessed Virgin from which this indescribable voice came from, wept 101 times over the course of several years (last recorded occurrence was September 15, 1981 on the Feast of Our Lady of Seven Sorrows). The status was also observed to “perspire abundantly” with the perspiration sending out a sweet perfume, witnessed by hundreds of people. Lastly, the right palm of the statue bled from a wound that had the form of a cross—an identical wound that developed on Sister Agnes’ right hand.

These miraculous events were witnessed by hundreds and scientific analysis revealed the blood, tears, and perspiration from the statue were human. Several miraculous cures are on record, including recovery from terminal brain cancer and the complete cure of Sister Agnes’ total deafness.
