Why pray the Rosary every day for a year?

Each time the Blessed Virgin has appeared-- whether it be to Saint Bernadette Soubirous at Lourdes; to Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco at Fatima; or to Mariette Beco at Banneux-- she has asserted the importance, saving grace, and power of praying the Holy Rosary on a daily basis. Based upon her words, the Rosary is penance and conversion for sinners, a pathway to peace, an end to war, and a powerful act of faith in Jesus Christ. Pope Paul VI presented the Rosary as a powerful means to reach Christ "not merely with Mary but indeed, insofar as this is possible to us, in the same way as Mary, who is certainly the one who thought about Him more than anyone else has ever done."

To show us how this is done, perhaps no one has been more eloquent than the great Cardinal Newman, who wrote: "The great power of the Rosary consists in the fact that it translates the Creed into Prayer. Of course, the Creed is already in a certain sense a prayer and a great act of homage towards God, but the Rosary brings us to meditate again on the great truth of His life and death, and brings this truth close to our hearts. Even Christians, although they know God, usually fear rather than love Him. The strength of the Rosary lies in the particular manner in which it considers these mysteries, since all our thinking about Christ is intertwined with the thought of His Mother, in the relations between Mother and Son; the Holy Family is presented to us, the home in which God lived His infinite love."

As Mary said at Fatima, "Jesus wants to use you to make Me known and loved. He wishes to establish the devotion to My Immaculate Heart throughout the world. I promise salvation to whoever embraces it; these souls will be dear to God, like flowers put by Me to adorn his throne."

Our Lady of Beauraing: The First Apparition

Posted by Jacob

Today, November 29, marks the 80th anniversary of the first appearance of Our Blessed Mother to five children in Beauraing, Belgium in 1932. Over the next three months, ending on January 3, 1933, Mary appeared 33 times at the playground of a convent school the five visionaries, children who belonged to two families: the Voisins (Fernande, 15 years; Gilberte, 13 years; and Albert 11 years) and the Degeimbres (Andree, 14 years, and Gilberte, 9 years old). Identifying herself as "the Immaculate Virgin" and "Mother of God, Queen of Heaven," Our Blessed Mother urged the children to “be good” and to pray for the conversion of sinners. Our Lady of Beauraing is also known as the “Virgin of the Golden Heart,” as her heart seemed to glow with a golden radiance when she appeared to the children.

Beauraing, Belgium is a small farming village that lies about sixty miles southeast of Brussels. At the time of the apparitions, the population numbered just 2000. Depression was upon Europe, and unemployment, poverty, and hunger were common. The faithful were falling away from the Church, and anti-Christian political movements were gaining power. The Voisins and the Degeimbres remained practicing Catholics at that time, although only sporadically. However, like many families in Europe at the time, they continued to send one of their children to be educated at a Catholic school. Gilberte was to receive a Catholic education from the Sisters of Christian Doctrine. Each night, Gilberte’s older sister, Fernande (age 15) and younger brother, Albert (age 11) went to meet their sister at the academy after school. This was nothing unusual – they would often walk Gilberte home. On the way to the academy two other girls joined them: Andree Degeimbre (age 14) and Gilberte Degeimbre (age 9). All the children were friends.

As was their habit, the four ran through the quiet town, playing games and mischievously playing pranks on their neighbors in the dark night. That night, however, something was different. November 29, 1932 would mark their first encounter with “the beautiful lady,” although only from a distance. Upon arriving at the convent, the four children played in the garden, waiting for Gilberte to finish school. In the garden was a small statue of Our Lady of Lourdes. Beyond the garden was the street, and above it a small railroad bridge. As the four were playing, Albert glanced at the bridge, and noticed a lady, dressed all in white, floating as if walking on air above them. As he watched, he clearly could make out the figure bending her knees, walking.

Albert shouted to the others, gaining their attention, and gesturing at the bridge. “It’s the Virgin walking above the bridge!” he exclaimed, his voice noticeably higher and slightly peculiar sounding to the others. They were surprised—even curious—but thought him to be joking. But upon closer examination, they, too, saw her and confirmed “she could be the Blessed Virgin Mary!”

As they were marveling at the appearance of the beautiful lady walking on air, Sister Valeria, Gilberte’s teacher, opened the academy door to allow Gilberte to join her friends. Immediately, she sensed something different about the children. Rather than laughing and joking, they were all quite pale, and somehow appeared anxious. They ran to her, and quickly told her of their vision, pointing to the bridge, and exclaiming their faith. Sister Valeria saw nothing, however, and moved into the garden, turned on lights, and squinted… but she saw no lady on the bridge.

Sister Valeria scolded the children, thinking them playing a prank. Upon turning, however, she discovered that Gilberte—who had been with her, and could not have been involved in this trickery—too, saw the beautiful lady. Gilberte described her as wearing a long, white gown and a long, silk veil that flowed to a small cloud covering her feet—as if walking on air! The beautiful lady gave off a radiant light, which grew in intensity as she approached. Her hands were folded in prayer, and as she neared them, she smiled, but said nothing. Later, all they could say was that her eyes were a deep and magnetic blue, and that she was beautiful.

Sister Valeria, cold and irritated, sent the children away, instructing them not to play pranks, nor to tell anyone the story they had told her. At supper, however, she recounted their story to the Superior Mother of the house, but was instructed to forget it as it was simply the immature story of a group of children. The children, for their part, ran home and immediately told their parents, eager to share their exciting news. Of course, they were not believed, and instead, were scolded for lying. Their friends teased them the next day, and several were taken to see the family physician, as they were concerned for their mental health.

Over the next several nights, however, the children would see Our Blessed Mother on the bridge again, always walking toward them, never speaking. After repeatedly telling their parents, they were encouraged to ask the Lady her name. This they would courageously do on December 2, the evening of the next phase of apparitions.

Our Lady would return to the children thirty-three times over the next 10 weeks, bringing with her a message of peace, penance, and prayer for the conversion of sinners. Our Blessed Mother graced us with her golden heart, encouraging us to sacrifice ourselves for the Lord, and for the salvation of the world. We pray today, on the anniversary of the first apparition, for conversion of sinners, peace, and salvation.

Our Lady of Beauraing, Immaculate Virgin, bring to Jesus, your Son, all the intentions that we entrust to you today. Mother of the Golden Heart, reflection of the Father's tenderness, look upon the men and women of our time with love and fill them with the joy of your presence. You, who promised to convert sinners, help us discover the infinite mercy of our God. Awaken within us the grace of conversion so that our lives may be a reflection of that mercy. Make every moment of our existence "a yes" to the question you ask today: "Do you love my Son? Do you love me?" Then the kingdom of Jesus will come to the world. Amen.

Our Lady of Beauraing: "Pray Always."

Today, December 31, marks the anniversary of the appearance of Our Blessed Mother to five children in Beauraing, Belgium in 1932. Our Lady of Beauraing, also known as the “Virgin of the Golden Heart,” had appeared to Fernande, Gilberte, and Albert Voisins and Andree and Gilberte Degeimbres the over the previous weeks, beginning on November 29. Dressed in a flowing white gown, the lady emanated a radiant glow, and smiled at them as she approached. Following the initial apparition, Our Blessed Mother continued to appear to the children (on December 2, December 8, December 21, December 23, December 28, and December 30), confirming her identity as the Immaculate Virgin, and requesting that a chapel be built. She further implored them to “Always be good.” On the previous evening, December 30, the Virgin of the Golden Heart had instructed the children, “Pray. Pray very much.”

Today, on the last day of 1932, Our Blessed Mother again appeared to the children as they were praying the Rosary in the convent garden. Alighting on the hawthorn tree, she smiled gently at them. The children, having been told that the apparitions were drawing to a close, were filled with peace and joy, and were especially grateful to be in the presence of her Immaculate Heart. Whereas only Fernande had been graced with a vision of Mary’s radiant, golden heart on the previous occasions, at this point, all five children witnessed its golden glow.

When the children were done praying, Mary spoke. She implored, “Pray always,” before leaving them. Our Blessed Mother graced us with her golden heart, encouraging us to sacrifice ourselves for the Lord, and for the salvation of the world. We pray today, in the words of Our Mother, to find the strength and virtue “to be good” in the eyes of the Lord.

On December 29th, the Blessed Virgin had appeared to the children, but remained silent while they prayed the Rosary. As she opened her arms, spreading them in front of her, as was her usual gesture of farewell to the children, Fernande was transfixed by the image that greeted her. Our Lady’s heart was visible—golden, and radiant, surrounded by glittering rays of light, emanating from the center and spreading into the world. Without doubt, Fernande recognized the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Over the next several days, the other children would report seeing the same vision of Our Blessed Mother’s golden heart.

On December 30th, Our Lady delivered her message of prayer, penance, and redemption. Similar to the messages she delivered at Lourdes and Fatima (although predating Fatima), Our Blessed Mother said to the children: “Pray. Pray very much.” She would repeat these instructions in the next several apparitions—although, as she had told the children, they would soon be finished.

Our Blessed Mother graced us with her golden heart, encouraging us to sacrifice ourselves for the Lord, and for the salvation of the world. We pray today, in the words of Our Mother, to find the strength and virtue “to be good” in the eyes of the Lord.

Our Lady of Beauraing: Prelude to the Virgin's Message

She further implored them to “Always be good.” The apparitions did not occur every night, but the children visited the convent garden, hoping to see her each night.

On the 24th of December, 1932—Christmas Eve—the Blessed Virgin had appeared to the children in the convent garden. The children had been receiving pressure from local government officials, as well as the clergy, for “proof” of the beautiful lady’s identity. Where they had previously refused to ask her for that proof, the pressure had finally grown too great, and following completion of the Rosary, Fernande asked, “Since you are the Immaculate Virgin, will you give us proof of it?”

The Virgin of the Golden Heart smiled, and simply said, “Yes.” She then departed, leaving the children alone in the garden.

On the 28th, the crowds again gathered and observed the children fall to their knees in prayer, in unison.  The visionaries were closely watched to ensure they could not talk to each other, and when the apparition was over were questioned separately. During that questioning, each of the children reported that Our Blessed Mother had said the same thing: "My last apparition will take place soon."

Mary would return on the 30th of the month, revealing her message and opening her immaculate heart to the child visionaries.

The Blessed Virgin appeared thirty-three times over the course of 10 weeks, bringing with her a message of peace, penance, and prayer for the conversion of sinners. Our Blessed Mother graced us with her golden heart, encouraging us to sacrifice ourselves for the Lord, and for the salvation of the world. On the 23rd of December, 1932, the children waited eagerly in the convent garden for the Virgin of the Golden Heart to appear. As was her custom, she did, alighting on the small hawthorn tree. As was now customary, a large crowd had gathered to watch the children, hoping to glimpse the beautiful lady themselves. As the crowd watched, the children dropped to their knees in unison, and began praying the Rosary in earnest. Our Lady joined them, although she was only visible to the visionaries.

At the conclusion of their prayers, Fernande asked Our Blessed Mother, “why do you come?”

Smiling gently, Mary replied, “That people may come here on pilgrimages.” She then departed, leaving the children alone in the garden. Everything Our Blessed Mother had said served as prelude to the core of her message of prayer and redemption, which she would deliver in the next series of apparitions.

The Blessed Virgin would return to the children thirty-three times over the course of 10 weeks, bringing with her a message of peace, penance, and prayer for the conversion of sinners. Our Lady of Beauraing: The Apparitions Continue

But the children maintained their story, and over the next several nights, witnessed the same apparition of Our Blessed Mother. On December 2, the children, bravely, asked her name, and she nodded her assent to the question, “Are you the Immaculate Virgin?”

Over the next several weeks, between December 2 and 21, Our Virgin of the Golden Heart continued to appear nightly to the children, in the convent garden, hovering over a hawthorn tree. She smiled gently at them, prayed, and they were transfixed by her beauty.

On the feast of the Immaculate Conception, on December 8, a crowd of 15,000 gathered, observing the children becoming “transfixed” and immovable. Although no one else could see the Blessed Virgin, their eyes locked and a look of peace and serenity overtook them. Physicians tested them during the apparition, finding them immovable and unhurt by pin pricks, burns, and lights. The five children remained in ecstasy for nearly 15 minutes, at which time they Blessed Virgin departed as in past visions.

On the seventeenth of December, Our Blessed Mother requested that a chapel be built, upon questioning from the children (prompted by the clergy). Today, on the 21st, Our Virgin of the Golden Heart appeared again to the children in the small convent garden, alighting on the hawthorn tree.

As had become their custom, the children prayed the Holy Rosary along with Mary, transfixed and peaceful. Upon completion of the prayer, they said, “Tell us who you are.”

Our Blessed Mother clearly replied, “I am the Immaculate Virgin.”
After a few more joyful moments in her presence, Our Lady disappeared as she had in each previous apparition, floating into the heavens.

The Blessed Virgin would return to the children thirty-three times over the course of 10 weeks, bringing with her a message of peace, penance, and prayer for the conversion of sinners. Our Lady of Beauraing: The Apparitions Continue

Today, December 8, marks the anniversary of the appearance of Our Blessed Mother to five children in Beauraing, Belgium in 1932. Our Lady of Beauraing, also known as the “Virgin of the Golden Heart,” had appeared to Fernande, Gilberte, and Albert Voisins and Andree and Gilberte Degeimbres the over the previous weeks, beginning on November 29. On that day, the children saw a “beautiful lady” walking through the air above a railroad bridge. Following the apparition, the nuns at the convent, the children’s parents, and even their friends had scolded them and teased them. But the children maintained their story, and over the next several nights, witnessed the same apparition of Our Blessed Mother. On December 2, the children, bravely, asked her name, and she confirmed that she was Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception. Our lady encouraged the children to return and spend the Feast of the Immaculate Conception with her, on December 8.

Over the days between December 2 and 8, Our Virgin of the Golden Heart continued to appear nightly to the children, in the convent garden, hovering over a hawthorn tree. She smiled gently at them, prayed, and they were transfixed by her beauty. During those apparitions, Our Blessed Mother confirmed that the children were to come to the garden on her feast at night.

The children did as they were told, arriving at the convent garden on the evening of December 8, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. Of course, by now, word had spread of the rumored apparitions, and a crowd of 15,000 people accompanied them, including their parents, the convent nuns, family physicians hired to test the children during their alleged apparitions, and individuals hoping to be healed of various maladies.

As the crowd watched, the children knelt and prayed the Rosary, becoming “transfixed” and immovable, although no one else could see the Blessed Virgin. Their eyes locked and a look of peace and serenity overtook them.

Meanwhile, the family physicians present, Doctors Maistriaux, Lurquin and others, engaged in a series of tests to determine physiological reactions. They pinched, slapped, pricked the fingers of the children, and shone flashlights in their eyes. Receiving no response, Doctor Lurquin held a lit match beneath Gilberte Voisin’s left hand. Still there was no response until after the apparition ended. Remarkably, at that time, it was observed that there was no sign of injury to any of the children. They remained in ecstasy for nearly 15 minutes, at which time they Blessed Virgin departed as in past visions.

When the vision concluded, one of the children explained, "I could see nothing, neither fence, nor tree, nor crowd; only the Holy Virgin who smiled at us."

Another said laughingly, "Just think Daddy, they tried to make me believe they had pricked and burned me."

Still another, "She was more beautiful than ever!"

Following the evening of the 8th, the local bishop, remaining prudent and doubtful, ordered his priests not to visit the site.

Our Lady of Beauraing: The Second Apparition

Posted by Jacob

Today, December 2, marks the anniversary of the second appearance of Our Blessed Mother to five children in Beauraing, Belgium in 1932. Our Lady of Beauraing, also known as the “Virgin of the Golden Heart,” 33 times in the garden of a convent school to the five visionaries: Fernande, Gilberte, and Albert Voisins and Andree and Gilberte Degeimbres.

On November 29, the children had seen a beautiful lady walking on the air above them, near a small railroad bridge. Dressed in a flowing white gown, the lady emanated a radiant glow, and smiled at them as she approached. She was observed to be praying, never spoke, and simply gazed upon them with beautiful blue eyes.

Following the apparition, the nuns at the convent, the children’s parents, and even their friends had scolded them and teased them. But the children maintained their story, and over the next several nights, witnessed the same apparition of Our Blessed Mother. Finally, the exasperated parents encouraged them to ask this figure for her name.

On December 2, the lady appeared as she had on previous evenings. She looked about eighteen years old. Her eyes were deep blue and there were rays of light shining about her head. Per the children’s report, she wore a long white pleated gown with a blue sash, and the dress reflected a blue glow. Her hands were held in prayer, although in later visitations she would carry a Rosary with her. Our Blessed Mother came to rest on the bows of a Hawthorn bush, and smiled gently at the children.

Albert was very anxious, but courageously spoke to her, the first to do so. "Are you the Immaculate Virgin?" he asked.

The Lady smiled and nodded Her head without speaking. After a moment, she said to the five visionaries: “Always be good.” And then, “Is it true that you will always be good?” The children assured her that they would be, and smiling, she disappeared—but not before asking them to return on December 8, the feast of the Immaculate Conception.

We pray today, in the words of Our Mother, to find the strength and virtue “to be good” in the eyes of the Lord.

Amen.

Our Lady of Beauraing: The First Apparition

Posted by Jacob

Today, November 29, marks the anniversary of the first appearance of Our Blessed Mother to five children in Beauraing, Belgium in 1932.

Our Lady of Beauraing: The Final Apparition

Posted by Jacob

Today, January 3, marks the anniversary of the Blessed Mother’s last visitation to the children at Beauraing, Belgium. She appeared more than 30 times between November 1932 and January 3, 1933 to Albert, Gilberte, and Fernande Voisin (ages 9, 13 and 15) and Andree and Gilberte Degeimbre (ages 14 and 9). For more background information on this series of Marian apparitions, visit my January 1st entry.

On the evening of January 3, 1933, a large crowd (believed to be between thirty and thirty-five thousand people) assembled as the five children began praying the rosary, as had become their custom. After two decades were prayed, Albert, Gilberte, Andree, and Gilberte exclaimed the Blessed Mother’s presence and fell to their knees. Fernande, the oldest, wept as she could see nothing.
On this day, Our Lady of the Golden Heart, imparted what has been understood as the main promise of the Beauraing visits. To Gilberte Voisin she said, “I will convert sinners," before bidding her adieu.

To Andree she said: "I am the Mother of God, the Queen of Heaven. Pray always." She then disappeared.

Fernande, still weeping, remained kneeling while the other children went inside for questioning by the local authorities. Without warning, she, and many in the crowd, heard a loud noise like thunder and saw a ball of fire on the hawthorn tree where Mary had frequently appeared. The Blessed Mother appeared and spoke to Fernande, inquiring as to whether she loved her Son and herself. When Fernande replied in the affirmative, Mary’s response was: "Then sacrifice yourself for me." At this the Blessed Virgin glowed with extraordinary brilliance and extended her arms, so that the girl could see her golden heart, before saying, "Goodbye," and disappearing from Beauraing for the last time.

Our Lady of Beauraing

Between November 29, 1932 and January 3, 1933, in Beauraing, Belgium, the Blessed Virgin appeared to a group of five children thirty-two times. The five children came from the Voisin and Degeimbre families: Albert, Gilberte, and Fernande Voisin (ages 9, 13 and 15) and Andree and Gilberte Degeimbre (ages 14 and 9). The children saw the figure of a "lady dressed in white with clouds at her feet." The apparitions occurred above a hawthorn tree in a grotto between a local viaduct and convent. No adult could see or hear the Virgin, and most were skeptical even when the children simultaneously kneeled and recited Hail Mary.

During the course of the apparitions, the children witnessed the Blessed Virgin's "heart of gold"-- a golden heart shining through her robe, with golden rays of light emanating from within. The message of Mary during her visits focused on prayer, penance, and conversion.

January first marks the next to the last apparition of the Blessed Mary to the children. During that visit, Mary spoke to Gilberte Voisin, asking her to, "Pray always," with the emphasis on always.

Today, we ask for the intercession of the Our Lady of Beauraing’s golden heart as we pray for peace.
